Minutes Of The Pre-Season Meeting

On September 1, 2011, the Garden State Chess League held its annual pre-season meeting.

Kevin Chen, Jose Fernandez, John Hagerty, Geoff McAuliffe (of the Kenilworth Kortchnois), Charles Miller, Ed Selling & John Moldovan (representing Summit and the Kenilworth Karpovs) attended.

Chess Mates and Sparta did not send representatives. Both teams have said their status for 2011-12 is undecided.

The Toms River CC expressed interest through a 3rd party (Lou Sturniolo) and was contacted by email & phone.

The following teams paid their dues and confirmed that they will play this season: DOCA Knights, Hamilton, Karpovs, Kortchnois, Staten Island, Summit and West Orange.

A September 25th deadline was set for Chess Mates, Sparta and Toms River, to confirm.

The attendees voted to play with the same rules as last season (including the 1900 rating average) and approved using the USCF's September 2011 Golden Database, to determine ratings.

A schedule was drafted using the table on page 296 of the USCF's Official Rules Of Chess (5th edition). The confirmed teams drew numbers from 1-7 and the undecided teams drew numbers from 8-10.

Regardless of the Staten Island-W. Orange and DOCA Knights-Sparta outcomes (which have not been reported as yet!), Chess Mates will finish 3rd, since they have defeated the 3 other teams that can end-up with 4.5 points.

If there is a 4-way tie for 3rd, the standings order will be: 3.Chess Mates, 4.DOCA Knights, 5.Kenilworth Kortchnois, 6.West Orange.

In all 2 and 3-way ties at 4.5, the pecking-order will be the same.

Kortchnois Upset Hamilton, Tie For 3rd

The Kenilworth Korthchnois finished the 2010-11 season the way they ended the 2009-10 campaign, by upsetting league-champion Hamilton 2.5-1.5 and denying them an undefeated season!

Greg Tomkovich and newcomer Scott Smith had victories for the spoilers, who were shorthanded (again!) and forfeited board 1. Phil Hepler's draw on board 3 was Hamilton's only bright spot.

Summit Pair Among U.S. Am-East Winners

Donnally Miller (r) and Lou Sturniolo (l) of the Summit team were among the winners at last month's U.S. Amateur East Tournament in Somerset, NJ. Miller won the U1800 Section outright, scoring 5.0/6 while Sturniolo was the top U1800 Senior.

Hamilton Draws, Clinches GSCL Title

Hamilton clinched their second straight Garden State title with a 2-2 draw against the Kenilworth Karpovs last night.

The champs received victories from Phil Hepler and Charles Miller while the runner-up Karpovs, who finished at +4-1=3, got wins from Steve Stoyko and Joe Demetrick.

Interestingly, the league's top 3 scorers (Sherer, Sytnik & Milovanovic) lost and a sub for the #4 scorer also fell!

In Thursday's other match, the Kenilworth Kortchnois, making a late bid to finish among the top 4 teams, defeated Staten Island 3.5-0.5, with Richard Lewis, Geoff McAuliffe and Ken Chieu taking full points.

The season wraps-up next month.
